Shared Adventure and
Monterey Bay Ninety Nines
Welcome Challenge Air to Watsonville
for the first annual Day In The Sky
Saturday April 16, 2005
  • Shared Adventures, the Santa Cruz based non-profit organization dedicated to bringing the outdoors into the lives of people with physical challenges and special needs, has a unique opportunity to partner with the Monterey Bay Ninety-Nines International Organization of Women Pilots to "host" the first ever Watsonville Airport visit of Challenge Air, the Dallas-based not-for-profit organization, offering motivational, inspirational and life-changing experiences to physically challenged children and youth through aviation.
  • Saturday, April 16, 2005, 9am to 5pm (proposed date).
  • Approximately 125 challenged children (+ 2 guests each) will experience 30 minute flights.
  • Volunteer Pilots drawn from Northern California, the Monterey 99's, Local EAA Chapter 119, and IWA (International Wheelchair Aviators).
  • About 100 additional volunteers required, depending on ground activities.
  • Aircraft displays, face painting, fundraiser BBQ, clowns, other ground events.
  • Approximately 800 people usually attend, including kids, families, friends, volunteers, and pilots.

Challenge Air
Aviation Opportunities for Kids and Friends
  • Challenge Air for Kids and Friends,a not-for-profit organization,
  • offers motivational, inspirational and life-changing experiences
  • to physically challenged children and youth through aviation.
  • Challenge Air works closely with International Wheelchair Aviators
    • (IWA) and Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) all across the United States.
  • Based in Dallas,Texas at LUV Field, Challenge Air has 3 full time staff and thousands of nationwide volunteers.
  • Challenge Air hosted 8 "Fly Days" serving 2000+ kids in the United States in 2004 and expects to host 10 or more "Fly Days" in 2005.
  • Average "Fly Day" served 125 challenged kids.  800 people total typically show up for events, including kids, friends, family, volunteers, and pilots.
  • Shared Adventures has the unique opportunity to partner with the Monterey Ninety-Nines host the first ever Challenge Air Fly Day in Northern California.

Shared Adventures
  • Founded by Foster Andersen in 1994, Shared Adventures is a Santa Cruz, California based non-profit organization dedicated to bringing the outdoors into the lives of people with physical challenges and special needs.
  • Shared Adventures hosts the annual "Day On The Beach" in Santa Cruz, enabling up to 200 persons with disabilities to work with 400 volunteers to participate in kayaking, canoeing, surfing, and scuba diving.
  • Shared Adventures publishes Access Santa Cruz County the definitive Santa Cruz County resource guide for people with special needs and physical challenges.
  • Shared Adventures annually hosts events serving as many as 1000 persons with disabilities all over Santa Cruz County and Northern California.

Monterey Bay Ninety-Nines
International Organization of Women Pilots
  • The Ninety-Nines, Inc. is the world's largest and oldest organization of licensed women pilots.
  • The 99s are a non-profit organization with 6,000 members worldwide organized into Sections and then into area chapters.
  • The 99s sponsor educational programs and aerospace education workshops for teachers, students, and licensed pilots.
  • The 99s sponsors more than 75% of the Federal Aviation Administration Pilot safety programs in the United States each year.
  • The Monterey Ninety-Nines already sponsor numerous events at WVI including the annual 40,000 person Watsonville Fly-In and Air Show.

Why Watsonville Airport (WVI)?
  • "Best General Aviation Airport" on the Central Coast.
  • Santa Cruz County.  Right in Shared Adventures' back yard.
  • No significant commercial traffic to worry about.
  • Enormous volunteer infrastructure for such events, including Memorial Day Fly In (40,000 spectators & 300+ volunteers in 2004).  Lots of experience hosting such events.
  • EAA chapter 119 (Experimental Aircraft Association) already hosts Young Eagle programs

Recruiting Kids
  • Up to 125 child participants (under age 18) recruited from two sources:
    • Half from Shared Adventures contacts.
    • Half from Watsonville ILCs, rehab, special ed, etc.
  • Kids may select up to 2 guest fliers each (family or friends).
  • Pre flight ground school introduces kids to airplane fundamentals.
  • Child usually gets to control the plane briefly while aloft.
  • Kids receive "EAA Young Eagles Wings" after landing.
  • Static aircraft and lots of fun ground activities keep other young visitors engaged all day.
  • Online registration already up and running to register kids.

Recruiting Volunteers
  • About 100 volunteers required per 125 challenged kids.
  • Seven volunteer coordinators required.
  • Challenge Air publishes a manual specifying 7 coordinators:
    • Local Event Coordinator
    • Volunteer Coordinator
    • Participant Locator
    • Public Relations/Media Coordinator
    • Set-up Coordinator
    • Activities Coordinator
    • Food Service Coordinator
  • Volunteers will be recruited from Shared Adventures list of 700+ volunteers, and Watsonville volunteers.
  • Online registration already up and running to register volunteers.

  • Pilots drawn from the entire West Coast.
  • All pilots provide their own airplanes and fuel.
  • IWA to help spread the word to "Wheelchair Aviators" with special adapted hand-controlled airplanes.

November 13, 2004
  • Last Challenge Air "Fly Day" of 2004: San Diego on November 13, 2004.
  • Foster and Dean are going to check out the event, take pictures, observe registration details, etc.
  • Our goal: network, observe, and document Challenge Air operations in Southern California.
  • Anybody else want to join us in San Diego?

Where from Here?
  • Extensive Challenge Air Checklist to be completed and contacts to be made asap:
    • Watsonville Airport.  Need airport contacts, permits, and scheduling.
    • Identify a local Shared Adventures partner sponsor for the event.  99's, EAA, etc?
    • Watsonville participant recruiting ILCs, Rehab groups, etc.
    • Participant selection. Up to 125 participants plus guests.  Half from Shared Adventures Santa Cruz, half selected by Watsonville.
    • Volunteer Coordinators.  7 required.
    • Volunteers.  About 100 required.  Tap into enormous base of Watsonville airport volunteers, 99s, EAA, plus Shared Adventures list of 700+  volunteers.
    • Funding.  Corporate sponsorships required.  Costs are roughly equivalent to Day on the Beach.

    • Challenge Air representative to fly to Watsonville in January 2005 to meet with airport officials and meet volunteer coordinators.
